Rematch Between Alycia Baumgardner And Mikaela Mayer A Possibility According To Promoter Hearn
Eddie Hearn, the promoter of unified 130-pound champion Alycia Baumgardner, told the Matchroom Boxing YouTube channel at the Taylor-Carabjal media workout today that they’re “open to discussing the rematch with Mikaela Mayer“.
Baumgardner (13-1, 7 KOs) controversially outpointed Mayer (17-1, 5 KOs) via a split decision on the Shields Marshall card and immediately denied any possibility of a rematch with Mayer. Hearn acknowledged this but explained that this was largely due to the bad blood between the pair pre-fight and that if it made financial sense, they would do the rematch.
Hearn stated that the first fight was close, although he had Baumgardner winning, and that a rematch between the pair “would be sensational” and could headline a fight night in the United States – what Hearn believes it should’ve done the first time around.
However, first Hearn wants to make an undisputed clash for Baumgardner with South Korea’s unbeaten WBA champion Hyun Mi Choi (20-0). Matchroom represents both Baumgardner and Choi and therefore an undisputed bout shouldn’t be too difficult to make.
Hearn/Matchroom work with all the major talent between those weight classes in women’s boxing and therefore Baumgardner has a plethora of options that could include Ireland’s Katie Taylor, unified 140-pound champion Chatelle Cameron and undisputed welterweight titleist Jessica McCaskill.
