Mauricio Lara vs Jose Sanmartin Tops Matchroom’s Return To Mexico As Featherweight Dangerman Returns To His Hometown
What can we expect from Lara?
The Bronco will look to implement his heavy-hitting, trademark Mexicano style and come to seek-and-destroy Jose Sanmartin. His rise to fame was built on the decimation of an out-of-sort Josh Warrington and his last fight with Emilio Sanchez also saw him dismantle a fighter, especially through vicious body shots.
He did get hit too often himself but should be forgiven for an eagerness to unload some pent-up frustration, having seen an unfulfilling and unsatisfying end to his rematch with Warrington, combined with a failure to agree on a lucrative trilogy bout.
What can we expect from Sanmartin?
Sanmartin’s most notable fight is a knockout loss to Emanuel Navarrette. That’s the only one of his 5 losses that have come inside the scheduled distance, and he did make it into the 12th round as well. His most notable win is a points victory over an overweight David Carmona.
Fight Breakdown
He has a strong punch resistance which means he may prove tricky for Lara to break down but when he tried against Navarrette, his hands lowered and he was often pushed back against the ropes. If Lara gets him there and can budge him in the first half of the statement, he will warrant a degree of credit. Sanmartin does also have knockout power of his own and did drop Carmona twice.
What’s at stake for Lara?
Lara needs to win with ease if he wants to push on in his quest for a world title, which feels overdue. (It was sadly not on the line against Warrington, as he had recently vacated it.)
