Has Billy Joe Saunders finally got the golden ticket? Is Callum Smith out of the race for a showdown with Canelo? Boxing insider Mike Coppinger tweeted Saturday:

‘Sources: Canelo Alvarez has zeroed in on Billy Joe Saunders as his May 2 opponent, and negotiations are expected to pick up during the week toward consummating a deal. Saunders holds a 168-pound title, so a victory would make Canelo a full-fledged four-division champion’

Saunders has been chasing a fight with the p4p king for a number of years whilst also in pursuit of a fight with Golovkin. Saunders notably crashed the London press conference for Canelo v Golovkin in 2016 calling out both men. Canelo has recently made positive comments about Saunders, Talking too Ring Magazine he said:

“A fight between me and Billy Joe Saunders is a great fight, he’s a great fighter.”

“He’s a difficult southpaw and a champion, it’s a good fight”

The potential bout is rumoured to be taking place at the T-mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada on May 2nd.
