Ben Whittaker Issues Response After ‘Classless’ Behaviour Following Liam Cameron Win

Ben Whittaker has defended his explosive post-fight antics following his emphatic second-round stoppage of Liam Cameron in their heated rematch, a bout that ended far more decisively than their first meeting.

The light-heavyweight talent caused a stir last night by sticking his head through the ropes and shouting toward Cameron’s corner just moments after the referee waved the contest off in the second round. The animated celebration, followed by what many deemed an early stoppage, sparked a wave of criticism online, with trainer and pundit Dave Coldwell branding Whittaker’s behaviour as “classless.”

Their rematch came after a controversial first encounter, which ended in a technical draw when both fighters tumbled out of the ring and were unable to continue. That bizarre ending only added fuel to the fire for the return, with Whittaker mockingly named ‘Quittaker’ after the fight. Though booed on his entry to the ring last night, Whittaker wasted no time settling the score, stopping Cameron early.

Now, Whittaker has offered a defiant response to the backlash.

“You had everyone boo me, they portray me as a bad guy. At the end of the day I work very hard,” he told reporters.

“I was roaring like a lion, if a little bit of dribble came out then a little bit of dribble came out. But at the end of the day Jesus is king.”

Whittaker made a change to his camp after the last fight, and now trains under Andy Lee, who has built himself quite a stable lately, including Joseph Parker, Paddy Donovan, and now Hamzah Sheeraz.

Whether fans love him or loathe him, Whittaker is fast becoming one of British boxing’s most talked-about prospects.
