Isaac Dogboe Edges Split Decision Against Joet Gonzalez in WBC Title Elimination Bout

On Saturday, July 23, 2022, former WBO junior-featherweight champion Isaac Dogboe faced off against former title challenger, Joet Gonzalez in a WBC featherweight title elimination bout on ESPN+.

Prior to this fight, both men’s most recent losses were against current WBO featherweight, Emmanuel Navarrete. Dogboe was coming into this fight off a three-fight winning streak, following his back-to-back defeats against Navarrete, dating back to 2020. Gonzalez was coming off a bounce-back victory following his own defeat to Navarrete in 2021.

This fight was seen as a crossroads in the career of both men, in which neither can afford another loss if they were to challenge for another title.

The fight was an extremely tightly contested bout with both men never fully gaining momentum. Both men seemed satisfied to work on the inside and the official was willing to let them work out of most clinch situations.

It was a real scrap with both men connecting with 190+ punches against one another. However, Gonzalez was more accurate (197/549) and Dogboe had more activity (190/783). Almost every round of the ten-round contest was a close round making the fight very difficult to score.

As the final bell sounded both men seemed satisfied with their performance. The final scores were read out; one judge had it 96-94 Gonzalez and the other two scored it 96-94 Dogboe.

With that Isaac Dogboe won by split decision and extended his winning streak to four and his record improved to 24-2 (16 KOs). Joet Gonzalez falls to 25-3 (15 KOs) with him being 2-3 in his last five bouts he will have to look to bounce back in his next appearance.

Isaac Dogboe on the other hand puts himself in conversations for another title shot in hopes to capture gold for the second time in his career and in a second weight class.
