Leigh Wood vs Mauricio Lara Likely Set For Sep 24 As Mutual Step-A-Side Potentially Agreed

Leigh Wood vs Mauricio Lara Could Be Back On As Leo Santa Cruz and Wood Agree To Go In Different Directions

Journalist @BarbosaBox for ESPN Knock Out has confirmed what was rumoured last week, that Leigh Wood will not fight Leo Santa Cruz next and that instead Santa Cruz will unify his WBA (Super) Featherweight title with WBC champion Rey Vargas on a PBC on Showtime/Fox card.

Leigh Wood will instead defend his WBA Featherweight championship against Mexican dangerman Mauricio Lara, who produced one of the biggest upsets in a British ring when he stopped Josh Warrington last year, on September 24 likely at the Sheffield Arena (EDIT – Nottingham Arena now that the arena is available after the hockey game was moved) ; a Matchroom On DAZN UK headliner.

This is potentially the result of a mutual step-a-side between the PBC and Matchroom. The WBA announced that representatives of Wood and LSC had agreed on a deal 10 days ago and purse bids were cancelled, reliable boxing journalist Salvador Rodriguez reported that the fight was eyed for November 5/12. Despite this, it has now become a strong possibility that the deal between the two sides was not to fight each other but to temporarily go in different directions with both parties holding onto their titles.

An announcement on the September 24 Matchroom UK show is expected for early this week. Should reports be accurate, that is expected to feature Wood vs LSC, Terri Harper vs Hannah Rankin and Maxi Hughes potentially in a big fight. Hughes and Kid Galahad agreed on terms but it appears that fight will not go ahead.
