Eddie Hearn Reveals Plans To Make The Canelo vs Bivol Rematch At 168 For Canelo’s Undisputed Title

Canelo vs Bivol Rematch Could Give Bivol The Opportunity To Become Double Undisputed

Eddie Hearn\’s Matchroom Boxing has begun talks with Canelo Alvarez\’s trainer/manager Eddy Reynoso to discuss a two-fight deal that would see Canelo box on the DAZN platform in May and September of 2023.

For the May bout, Canelo has publicly stated his intention of having a \’comeback fight\’ from injury and Hearn told the DAZN Boxing Show that \”there\’s a very good chance that could be John Ryder\”.

There has been widespread speculation about Canelo vs Ryder taking place in the United Kingdom in May in an outdoor stadium. Canelo has never boxed outside North America but has expressed his desire to do so.

Canelo vs Bivol Rematch Plans

Hearn stated in the interview that \’Eddy Reynoso had made it very clear that (Canelo) wants the rematch with Dmitry Bivol\’ and that would be the target for September.

Hearn explained that the discussions are focused on the weight at which the bout could take place. When they met in May 2022, Bivol successfully defended his WBA Light Heavyweight (175 lbs) title against Canelo who was coming up from Super Middleweight (168 lbs).

Hearn \”Dmitry Bivol is about belts, he\’s about legacy. He\’s made it clear to us that he can make 168 pounds. Canelo against Bivol at 68 would enable Dmitry Bivol to try and become undisputed at a 168 pounds and if he was to be triumphant, he could move up and fight Beterbiev at 175\”

The British promoter argued that this would give Bivol the ultimate chance to be undisputed in two different weight classes and that even if he lost to Canelo, he still could fight Beterbiev for undisputed at 175.

Does Bivol Have To Take The Rematch?

Previously, Hearn has confirmed to boxing media that there is a rematch clause in place for Canelo Bivol 2.

When asked to specify the nature of that rematch clause, Hearn stated that whilst they \”Do have an agreement in place to look at the Canelo Alvarez fight\”, however, it does not appear that the terms are already set and according to Hearn they would have to be \”acceptable to Dmitry Bivol\” for the fight to happen.

From the outside looking in, the terms of the rematch clause look to be subject to negotiations and not concrete at all, therefore Bivol could definitely look to face IBF, WBC, and WBO champion Artur Beterbiev next if both parties want to do so.
