David Avanesyan Relinquishes European Welterweight Title, Unbeaten Fighters Ordered To Square Off For Vacant Championship
David Avanesyan Lands Terence Crawford World Title Opportunity, Gives Up EBU Strap.
Armenian-Russian David Avanesyan (29-3-1, 17 KOs) was scheduled to make the sixth defence of his European Welterweight championship on November 19 in Telford until his team received a surprise opportunity to face unbeaten WBO Welterweight champion, Terence Crawford.
Crawford was in negotiations to face Errol Spence but after it became apparent that the fight would not materialise for the end of 2022, Crawford, who has not boxed this year, wanted to get a fight in between and has chosen Avanesyan as his opponent for Dec 10.
Unbeaten 25-year-old, Spain’s Jon Miguez (17-0-0, 8 KOs) is the mandatory challenger for the belt and was supposed to face Avanesyan for the EBU strap. The organisation has now ordered the former European Union champion to face undefeated Frenchmen Jordy Weiss (29-0, 3 KOs).
Weiss and Miguez have until the 15th of November to agree on terms before a purse bid is scheduled. Miguez is represented by MGZ promotions whilst Weiss competes under the Gérard Teysseron banner.
Miguez last fought in May where he stopped Britain’s James Moorcroft in Bilbao on the undercard of local star Kerman Lejarraga. Weiss has a bout scheduled for this Saturday against Meriton Karaxha (29-6-3) in France.
