Oleksandr Usyk Arrested in Krakow Airport
The Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the world, Oleksandr Usyk, has been detained by Polish authorities in Krakow Airport today.
The Ukrainian comes off a career-defining performance against Tyson Fury to become the first Undisputed heavyweight since Lennox Lewis, and the first ever of the four-belt era. Usyk is set to face Fury in a much-anticipated rematch in December, and it is believed authorities had Usyk arrested whilst he was in transit on his way to training camp.
Oleksandr Usyk Arrested
Though the circumstances are currently unclear, what we do know is that Ukrainian politician and 2020 Olympic champion Zhan Beleniuk said on his Telegram that Polish authorities had Usyk arrested at Krakow airport.
In a video posted to Twitter, the champion can be seen walking away in handcuffs, followed by authorities. Usyk was set to appear at this Saturday’s AJ vs Dubois event in Wembley, London, though it is unclear if he has been released or, if he hasn’t, when he might.
Usyk’s wife, Kateryna, has come to his defence, stating, ‘Everything is fine, everything is fine. Oleksandr will explain everything later. Nothing criminal, goodnight everyone.’
Usyk’s friend and camp manager, Serge Lapin, has also spoken out on Instagram, stating, ‘Don’t worry, everything’s fine. The customs control service is neglecting its duties.’
The story is still developing and NoSmokeBoxing will be sure to post updates on the situation as it unfolds.
