DILLIAN WHYTE GETS AN UPDATE FROM THE WBC ON HIS MANDATORY POSITION

The WBC announced on Thursday that the winner of Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder III must face Dillian Whyte (27-1, 18 KOs) next, putting a Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua matchup in jeopardy for early next year.

Whyte, who will take on Alexander Povetkin (35-2-1) on Saturday, Aug. 22, is supposed to get his WBC title shot in February of next year, but the problem with that is it would mean there would be a short turnaround for Fury or Wilder to be ready to face him. Tyson Fury and Deaontay Wilder are still scheduled to square off Saturday, Dec. 19. A two-month break is barely enough time for either to fully recover and prepare, so it is likely a Dillian Whyte WBC matchup comes in March at the earliest. But, should Whyte have to wait past the deadline date that the WBC gave to him at the end of February 2021?

For a number of years, boxing fans have wanted to see Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs) go up against Joshua for the rights to the No.1 spot in the world. Joshua (23-1, 21 KOs) is set to fight Kubrat Pulev (28-1, 14 KOs) in December, meaning a summer 2021 fight for Joshua is on the horizon. The date would be against Fury, assuming he beats Wilder for a second time.

DILLIAN WHYTE GETS AN UPDATE FROM THE WBC

Now that the WBC has announced that they will enforce Dillian Whyte’s mandatory rights, in what appears to be no later than spring of next year, that will push back a Fury vs Joshua matchup yet again.
That fight has been delayed a couple of years now. Joshua lost to Andy Ruiz (33-2, 22 KOs) in June 2019 with a rematch occurring later that year to cover up his tracks.
With Wilder activating his rematch clause to fight Fury again for the third time, then COVID-19 happened and now with the WBC reaffirming the winner must face Dillian Whyte, it is likely we won’t see Joshua in the ring with the best Heavyweight for an undisputed draw until later in 2021.

There is, of course, the idea that the winner would vacate the title and let Whyte face No. 3 challenge Luis Ortiz for the belt. If that were to happen, we could see Wilder of Fury in the ring with Joshua earlier than expected, however, this would not be for all of the Heavyweight titles. All of this is dependent on a Whyte victory over a 40-year-old Povetkin.

The most likely scenario is Fury defeats Wilder and Joshua takes out Pulev in December. Then, come March or April, Fury and Whyte compete and Joshua takes a fight in June. That means if Fury and Joshua both win their first presumptive bouts, the two will meet at the end of next year.
Of course, all of this only happens if the two win the fights they are supposed to. If not, we could see any matchup between boxing’s top Heavyweights.

Joshua knocked out Whyte in December 2015, and, it could very well work out that they face each other again next summer for one of them to become the undisputed Heavyweight champion of the world. But it is more than likely Joshua will set an opponent, and wait out for a Fury meeting.
It will be interesting to see how these fights work out.

Have we ever seen a Heavyweight scene this messy and complicated?

How do you think the Heavyweight scene will play out? Will we see 2 of the top Heavyweights mentioned above face-off for all of the marbles? Let us know in the comment section.
