Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn are set to fight in London in April. The Benn vs Eubank Jr fight marks a third battle between the two families, after the pair’s fathers Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn blockbuster bouts years ago. Despite the history, Sky is hesitant to broadcast the event due to concerns around both fighters.
Eubank Jr. boasts a record of 34-3, with his three losses coming at the hands of Billy Joe Saunders, George Groves, and Liam Smith (a loss he avenged in the rematch). Conor Benn meanwhile holds a record of 23-0, with his career-best wins coming against Chris Algieri and Chris Van Heerden.
Benn vs Eubank Jr. Not On Sky?
Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn were originally set to fight in October 2022, but was cancelled after Conor Benn was found to have been using performance-enhancing drugs. ‘The Destroyer’ Benn claimed his innocence, and eventually won a lengthy and difficult process to regain his ability to box in this country.
Since his troubles with the BBBofC began, Benn has fought twice Stateside, where he won against both Rodolfo Orozco and Peter Dobson. Though durable fighters, some fans question Benn’s innocence, citing his average recent performances as evidence of Benn’s real ability when drug tested.
Eubank Jr. was heavily critical of Benn, leading to a genuine rivalry among the pair, beyond just their family history. Jr. last fought on the Bivol vs Beterbiev undercard, where he stopped Kamil Szeremeta to win the IBO world title. However, the son of the legendary Chris Eubank is not free from controversy himself either, as Sky is reportedly concerned too with Eubank Jr.’s close friendship with Mazhar Majeed, a convicted spot-fixer.
Majeed was sentenced to 32 months in prison in 2011 for his part in organising the corruption of a cricket test match between Pakistan and England at Lord’s. In 2014, Majeed plead guilty to tax fraud. He was also recorded stating that he had bought Croydon AFC for money laundering purposes. Majeed now works as a talent agent for boxers, and has a close relationship with Boxxer. Majeed is said to have played a large part in organising Amir Khan vs Kell Brook in 2022.
Though the bitter Benn vs Eubank Jr. grudge match is sure to attract a great many viewers and eyes, including those who watched Chris Eubank Sr. and Nigel Benn clash all those years ago, Sky is not wrong to have its concerns over some of the unsavoury circumstances that revolve around the fighters.
It remains to be seen whether Sky will broadcast the fight, though it is expected that DAZN will be the primary broadcaster, as it has been for previous Saudi-backed PPVs.
