Jaime Munguia is looking to build back following an incredible stoppage loss to Bruno Surace, who was a major underdog in the fight.
Munguia, 28, now boasts a record of 44-2, with his only two losses coming at the hands of Bruno Surace and Canelo Alvarez. Munguia went the distance with Canelo, and was dropped in the fourth round. Since then, Munguia outclassed and stopped Erik Bazinyan, before facing Surace.
Surace, then 25-0-1, had only five wins via stoppage, making his upset win over Munguia that much more dramatic. The stoppage happened in the sixth round, after Surace himself went down to the canvas earlier in the second round.
Munguia now has the task ahead of building back from his second career defeat, and has chosen a new trainer to help him do so.
Jaime Munguia Appoints Eddie Reynoso as Trainer
Speaking to Spanish TV Azteca, Reynoso said of Munguia, ‘Yes right now we’re working, we’ve been working with him for a week’.
This would make any potential rematch between Canelo and Munguia dead in the water, though it seems there is no bad blood between the pair, who are set to see much more of eachother under Reynoso’s tutelage.
Reynoso has confirmed, however, that the pair have not yet bumped into eachother at his gym, ‘Saul is barely getting started on physical training. Jaime already started to loosen up in the gym and work on some technical things. They haven’t run into each other.’
Canelo is said to be facing the likes of a William Scull or Christian Mbilli in May for Cinco De Mayo, before heading to Las Vegas in September for a superfight against Terence Crawford.
Munguia has chopped and changed coaches numerous times in his career, working alongside Erik Morales in his fight against John Ryder, before moving to train with Freddie Roach for the Canelo fight. He then returned to Morales for his next two fights. Has he now found a forever-home under Reynoso?
Canelo Gives Munguia Expensive Gift
When speaking of the fight, Canelo suggested he had carried Munguia out of respect, and opted not to stop the fellow Mexican. Though the pair are now set to train together, it seems the respect has been there from the start, with Canelo gifting Jaime Munguia a limited edition Mercedes G63 after their fight, as Munguia faced the aftermath of his first defeat.
Munguia is said to be targeting a rematch with Surace for April 12th in Mexico.
