Boxing Legend Manny Pacquiao Set To Make Shock Return At 46 In World Title Fight

Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39KO) made a highly anticipated return to the ring on July 19, 2025, in a WBC welterweight world title bout against then-champion Mario Barrios (29-2-1, 18KO). The electrifying clash, which took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, ultimately concluded in a majority draw, allowing Barrios to retain his title.

‘Pac-Man’ last fought professionally in August 2021, suffering a unanimous decision loss to Cuban Yordenis Ugas over twelve rounds. This bout was initially scheduled against Errol Spence Jr., but Ugas stepped in as a late replacement after Spence withdrew due to a torn retina. Following the Ugas defeat, Pacquiao announced his retirement from the sport in September 2021 to focus on his political career.

Mario ‘El Azteca’ Barrios, 16 years Pacquiao’s junior, had a significant journey to the WBC welterweight throne. He claimed the interim welterweight title by defeating the same Yordenis Ugas in September 2023 via a dominant unanimous decision, scoring two knockdowns in the process. Barrios was then elevated to full WBC champion in June 2024 after Terence Crawford vacated the title to move up a weight class. Since becoming interim champion, Barrios had fought twice, securing a unanimous decision win against Fabian Andres Maidana in May 2024 and, most recently before facing Pacquiao, defending his WBC belt for the first time in a hard-fought split decision draw against Abel Ramos on November 15, 2024, in Texas. The Ramos fight was a brutal affair, seeing both fighters hit the canvas, highlighting Barrios’ resilience and warrior spirit.

Having already cemented a legendary career as the only boxer to win world titles in eight weight divisions across four decades, many questioned why the Filipino icon chose to lace up the gloves once again at the age of 46, after four years out of the professional ring and what appeared to be a permanent shift in focus to politics. Concerns about his age and potential decline were voiced by many in the boxing community, including his former promoter Bob Arum. Adding to the historical significance, Pacquiao was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June 2025, just a month before his comeback fight.

Mauricio Sulaimán Confirms Manny Pacquiao Return

WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán confirmed Pacquiao’s return during a press conference held ahead of the undisputed title clash between Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez and William Scull in May 2025. Speaking to Boxing King Media, Sulaimán stated: “At this time Mario Barrios is going to fight Manny Pacquiao, that is a tremendous fight. He (Pacquiao) wants to retire as WBC champion so he’s fighting in the welterweight division.” Sulaimán further elaborated that WBC regulations allow for former champions of Pacquiao’s stature to petition for a world title fight upon returning from retirement, and that Pacquiao had been medically cleared and licensed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Pacquiao’s comeback bout was set to take place in July 2025, and if victorious, he would have once again etched his name in the history books as a WBC world champion, a belt he has held in multiple divisions throughout his illustrious career. The prospect of Pacquiao breaking his own record as the oldest welterweight world champion, a record he set at 40 years old in 2019, added another layer of intrigue to the contest.

The Fight: A Generational Clash Ends in a Draw

On July 19, 2025, Manny Pacquiao, at 46, stepped into the ring against the 30-year-old Mario Barrios in a highly anticipated contest. Despite the age gap and a four-year layoff from professional boxing, Pacquiao displayed flashes of his vintage speed and relentless aggression. The fight was a competitive, back-and-forth affair that captivated the audience at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

According to CompuBox statistics, Pacquiao held an 81-75 edge in power punches, while Barrios landed 45 jabs to Pacquiao’s 20, and more total punches (120-101). Pacquiao had his biggest moment in round eight, thrilling his fans with a series of powerful left hooks. However, Barrios showed championship mettle, digging deep and winning the final three rounds on all judges’ scorecards to secure the draw.

The judges’ scorecards reflected the close nature of the bout: two judges scored the fight 114-114, while the third judge awarded it 115-113 in favor of Barrios, resulting in a majority draw. The decision was met with loud boos from the heavily pro-Pacquiao crowd. Post-fight, Pacquiao expressed his belief that he had won: “I thought I won the fight. It was a close fight. He was very tough. I worked hard and stayed disciplined. I always keep my body in shape so that I can do this.” Barrios, while respectful, acknowledged Pacquiao’s enduring skills: “His stamina is crazy. He’s still strong as hell and his timing is real.
