As Deontay Wilder’s ring return against Tyrrell Herndon looms following his back to back losses to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang, there is one man who eyes a comeback fight with the former world champion.
Many believed Wilder would retire after his stoppage loss to Zhang, as ‘The Bronze Bomber’ who dropped Tyson Fury seemed a shell of his former self, failing to throw the right hand that made him famous.
Despite this, the Alabama native insists he wants another run at the titles, beginning with a tune-up fight against Herndon.
Shannon Briggs Calls Out Deontay Wilder
In a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, 53-year-old Shannon Briggs revealed that he’s planning a comeback this year and has his sights set squarely on Wilder:
“I’d like to fight him,” he said.
“I think it’d be a great fight in Alabama when he comes back. I haven’t really retired, they just won’t fight me. I’m gonna fight, so if he wants to go, we go.”
‘The Cannon’ Briggs, a former WBO champion hasn’t fought since 2016, when he scored a stoppage win over Emilio Zarate in London. Briggs holds a win over George Foreman, albeit a controversial one, and has also shared the squared circle with Vitali Klitschko.
His record is 60-6-1. Just seven of his wins came by decision.
While a clash with Wilder might seem unlikely given Briggs’ age and layoff, especially after Mike Tyson’s recent bout at the age of almost 60, it is not impossible considering Wilder’s career is undoubtedly winding down.
Whether Wilder entertains the idea remains to be seen. But for Briggs, the message is loud and clear: “If he wants to go, we go.”
