Ryan Garcia’s Former Opponent Begins Fight to Become Mayor

The boxing world and the political arena don’t often collide, but one former fighter is stepping into an entirely new ring.

Though uncommon, boxers turning over into politics is not unheard of, with Manny Pacquiao famously a Senator in the Philippines, Nikolai Valuev becoming a member of parliament, and Vitali Klitschko becoming mayor of Kyiv being just a few examples of fighters trading the ring for a fight of an entirely different kind.

The move comes as part of Reform UK’s campaign to gain influence in local government, with the party selecting one ex-boxer as their candidate.

Having competed at the highest level in the sport, even facing Ryan Garcia at the height of his career, he is no stranger to big challenges, but this latest venture represents an entirely different kind of battle.

Luke Campbell Steps Into Politics Alongside Nigel Farage

Luke Campbell, the 2012 Olympic boxing champion and former world title contender has shared the ring with stars like Ryan Garcia and Vasiliy Lomachenko, but retired from boxing in 2021, with many believing the Hull star never truly reached his potential.

Campbell, who famously fought Garcia in 2021, even knocking the American down before losing by stoppage has been named as Reform UK’s candidate in the upcoming Hull mayoral election, as the city prepares to introduce the role for the first time.

Speaking on his decision to enter politics, Campbell emphasised his desire to make a difference in Hull, the city where he was born and raised:

“I got excited about what I can do for my community. How can I put the people of Hull and East Yorkshire first?”

Campbell was seen pictured with Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform UK Party, ahead of his quest to become mayor.

With his campaign now underway, Campbell will be looking to prove he can be as effective in the political ring as he was in the boxing ring. But just like in his fights against Garcia and Lomachenko, he knows he’s up against tough opposition.

The election will take place later this year, and while the result remains to be seen, Luke Campbell is surely in for a fighting chance.

From Ring to Political Arena: A Growing Trend

The transition from professional sports to political office, while not commonplace, has seen several high-profile figures successfully trade athletic competition for public service. Beyond Luke Campbell’s recent foray, the most prominent example is arguably Manny Pacquiao, the legendary eight-division world champion from the Philippines. Pacquiao embarked on his political career in 2007, initially running for a seat in the Philippine House of Representatives, which he won in 2010. He later served as a Senator of the Philippines from 2016 to 2022, and even mounted an unsuccessful bid for the presidency in 2022. His political journey, however, has not been without criticism, including accusations of absenteeism and a lack of engagement with legislative matters.

Another notable example is Nikolai Valuev, the towering former WBA heavyweight champion from Russia. Standing at seven feet tall, Valuev transitioned into politics after retiring from boxing in 2009. He became a member of the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, in December 2011, representing the United Russia Party. Valuev has since remained active in Russian politics and sports development.

In Ukraine, Vitali Klitschko, a former multiple-time world heavyweight champion, has had a particularly impactful political career. Klitschko formally began his political journey in 2006, running for mayor of Kyiv. He founded the Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform (UDAR) party in 2010 and was elected to the Ukrainian parliament in 2012. A leading figure in the Euromaidan protests, he was elected Mayor of Kyiv on May 25, 2014, a position he has held since, becoming one of the longest-serving mayors of the city. These examples highlight a growing, albeit still rare, phenomenon of athletes leveraging their public profile and competitive drive to pursue political ambitions.

Luke Campbell’s Illustrious Boxing Career

Before stepping into the political ring, Luke Campbell forged a distinguished career in boxing, culminating in an Olympic gold medal and multiple world title challenges. Born in Hull, England, Campbell’s amateur career was decorated, winning the English senior ABA bantamweight title twice and a gold medal at the 2008 European Championships. His crowning amateur achievement came at the 2012 London Olympics, where he secured a gold medal in the bantamweight division, becoming the first British bantamweight to do so since 1908. This achievement earned him an MBE in the 2013 New Year Honours.

Campbell turned professional in 2013, quickly building an undefeated record in his early fights. He challenged for world titles twice, first against Jorge Linares for the WBA and Ring magazine lightweight titles in 2017, losing a close split decision. His second major world title opportunity came against Vasiliy Lomachenko in August 2019 for the WBA, WBC, and WBO lightweight titles. Lomachenko, widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters of his era with a professional record of 18 wins and 3 losses (12 by KO), ultimately secured a dominant unanimous decision victory, though Campbell put up a courageous fight, even stunning the Ukrainian briefly.

Perhaps his most memorable professional bout was against the then-undefeated American sensation Ryan Garcia on January 2, 2021. Garcia, known for his explosive power and “KingRy” persona, entered the fight with a formidable record. Campbell, despite being the underdog, shocked many by knocking Garcia down in the second round. However, Garcia recovered and ultimately stopped Campbell in the seventh round with a body shot. This fight, which was a WBC Interim Lightweight Title eliminator, was Campbell’s last professional contest, as he announced his retirement in 2021 with a professional record of 20 wins (16 by KO) and 4 losses. Ryan Garcia has since continued his career, with a professional record of 25 wins and 2 losses (20 KOs) as of February 2026, though his career has also seen a no-contest and a high-profile loss to Gervonta Davis.

The Hull Mayoral Bid and Its Outcome

Luke Campbell’s announcement as Reform UK’s candidate for the inaugural Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire marked a significant shift from his boxing career. The election, which aimed to establish a new combined authority for the region, was held on May 1, 2025. Campbell, despite having no prior political experience and admitting he had never voted in an election before, emphasized his desire to “give back” to his hometown and put the people of Hull and East Yorkshire first.

The campaign saw Campbell pictured with Nigel Farage, the leader of the Reform UK Party, as the party sought to gain influence in local government. The election was contested by six candidates, with Campbell facing opposition from the Liberal Democrats, Conservatives, Labour, Green, and Yorkshire parties.

The results of the Hull and East Yorkshire mayoral election were declared on May 2, 2025. Luke Campbell of Reform UK was officially declared the winner, securing 48,491 votes, which accounted for 35.8% of the total. His victory came with a majority of 10,981 votes over the second-placed Liberal Democrat candidate, Mike Ross, who received 37,510 votes. The overall turnout for the election was 29.86%. Campbell officially assumed office as the inaugural Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire on May 6, 2025.

Implications and Aftermath

Campbell’s victory for Reform UK was a notable achievement for the party, marking their second metro mayor win and demonstrating their growing presence in local politics. His success was attributed by some to his status as an outsider to traditional politics and a local success story, resonating with voters seeking a different approach. Following his election, Campbell reiterated his commitment to putting the people of the region first.

The election result also had implications for the local political landscape. While Hull City Council had been controlled by the Liberal Democrats since 2022, Campbell’s victory, and Reform UK’s subsequent gains in the May 2026 Hull City Council local elections (winning ten of 19 available seats), led to a state of ‘no overall control’ in the council, with Reform UK becoming the third-largest party. This shift suggests a potential realignment of political power in the region, with Reform UK looking to challenge established parties in future elections. Luke Campbell’s journey from Olympic boxing champion to the first Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire is a testament to his fighting spirit and determination, now applied to a new arena of public service.
