EverythingBoxing Updates: Shannon Courtenay, Joyce Parker OFF?, DAZN-GBP, Canelo And MORE

Shannon Courtenay

Former WBA Bantamweight Champion, Watford’s Shannon Courtenay (7-2) revealed via IFL TV that she would return to the ring in the near future but she is not in camp yet. Courtenay is planning to return in an 8-rounder in the late summer before having her contracted rematch with WBA Champion, America’s Jaime Mitchell.

Shannon Courtenay also said she was targeting a rematch with Australian IBF Champion Ebanie Bridges in what would be a sizeable unification contest in the UK and worthy of the main event on DAZN should both win their next couple of fights. However, Courtenay is a long way away from that and must win a very tough rematch with Mitchell first.

Joyce Parker OFF?

Queensberry and Team Parker were looking at a multi-fight deal inevitably postponing Joe Joyce vs Joseph Parker from July 2 (probably to September) and as a result, Frank Warren has to look elsewhere for his July London show.

However, now it appears that the fight between Joyce and Parker may be off altogether from several insiders in the sport. If a multi-fight deal can be reached we may still see the fight this year though, but it appears that Joyce will take a warm-up fight on July 16 at the Copper Box in London.

Early rumours for this undercard are the return of WBO #1 Light Heavyweight Anthony Yarde, Middleweight contender Hamzah Sheeraz and Bantamweight prospect Dennis McCann. Looking at the location and date of this show, Sam Noakes, Mark Chamberlain, and Callum Johnson are all possibilities on the card. Queensberry also has a fight between Jason Cunningham and Zolani Tete to place on a card as well as Lennox Clarke vs Mark Heffron.

Mikaela Mayer vs Alycia Baumgardner

Promoter Top Rank announced on Monday that a fight between unified WBO/IBF Super Featherweight champion Mikaela Mayer and WBC 130-pound Titleist Alycia Baumgardner had been agreed for a Top Rank on ESPN/Sky Sports show in the late summer/early fall. Mayer-Baumgardner is a major all-American unification fight that can really succeed off the hype coming off of Taylor Serrano and Shields Marshall which will take place at a similar time.

Canelo

Last week, Eddie Hearn revealed via Twitter that the Canelo vs Bivol PPV did over 600k buys in the two territories it was available on PPV (the USA And Canada) and recently said the final number wouldn’t beat 700 but do between 600 and 700k.

Reputable boxing journalist Dan Rafael stated that the fight did 520k buys in those two territories as a direct contrary to Hearn. DAZN Numbers are rarely ever obtained, so take both statements with a pinch of salt. Eddie Hearn retaliated against Rafael on Monday on the DAZN Boxing show by rubbishing the claims and saying it did well over 600k which DAZN would be happy to back up.

Salvador Rodriguez for ESPN Mexico revealed that Alvarez was looking to fight GGG in a trilogy contest in September before rematching Bivol after that.

Chisora Kownacki

According to Dan Rafael, Eddie Hearn/Matchroom Boxing made Polish heavyweight Star Adam Kownacki a ‘7-digit offer’ for one fight: to face British heavyweight Derek Chisora on July 9 at The O2, London Live on DAZN. Rafael stated that Kownacki was contemplating between taking that fight and remaining with the PBC for a summer fight. Chisora has already signed his contract.

DAZN – GBP

DAZN Officially announced that it was renewing its contract with GBP that expired last year for an additional 3 years. Since February Golden Boy has still been showing cards on DAZN without a contract as a sign of goodwill and now they officially have an extension. The Golden Boy stable features Ryan Garcia, Vergil Ortiz, Jamie Munguia, and Zurdo Ramirez but they’re recent shows have been underwhelming.
