Lomachenko vs Tank Next As Davis’ Trainer Begins Preparing
In a recent post on social media, Gervonta Davis’ co-trainer, Kenny Ellis has stated that he has begun preparation for Lomachenko vs Tank, suggesting the rumoured match-up between the two may well be next.
Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis comes off a knockout win against previously undefeated prospect Frank Martin, as part of a double-header which also featured David Benavidez winning by unanimous decision against Oleksandr Gvozdyk in his light-heavyweight debut.
Gervonta Davis boasts recent dominant wins over Ryan Garcia, Rolly Romero, Hector Garcia and more, whilst former Olympian Lomachenko comes off recent wins over George Kambosos, Jamaine Ortiz (who many had winning against Teofimo Lopez) and Richard Commey.
Fans have wanted to see the Baltimore boxer face Lomachenko for years now, and it seems the fight may now become a reality.
Vasiliy Lomachenko comes off a stoppage win over Australia’s George Kambosos Jr to gain the IBF World Lightweight belt in what was a strong comeback for the Ukrainian following what many fans thought to be a controversial decision in Devin Haney’s favour when the pair fought in 2023.
Lomachenko vs Tank Next
In a post on Instagram, Tank’s co-trainer Kenny Ellis shared the following:
In the post, Ellis states that he has begun studying Lomachenko in preparation for a Lomachenko vs Tank bout next.
It appears Tank will open as the betting favourite, perhaps due to Loma being near the end of his career, but many fans are questioning why Tank is choosing to face Lomachenko only now, when many have been calling for the fight for years.
In a tweet from 2020, ESPN quoted Gervonta Davis as saying, ‘Lomachenko is at the end of his career. Well, not at the end of his career [but] he is up in age, you know? So he is trying to make the biggest fights he can make in a short period of time, but I’m 25 years old. My stretch [is] a little longer than his, so we are taking our time’.
Top Rank promoter, Bob Arum, has indicated that the Lomachenko vs Tank fight will indeed be next:
Though it seems that Tank has waited for Loma to fade with age before accepting the challenge to fight him, with Loma’s recent dominant performance over Kambosos Jr, and prior controversy in what was a close fight against Haney, it is unclear how a Lomachenko vs Tank bout may go should it happen soon.
