Mauricio Lara On Leigh Wood Fight, Targets Josh Warrington Revenge, Labels Warrington “A Dirty Fighter And A Cheat”

Mauricio Lara Aims To Set Up A Trilogy With Josh Warrington If He Can Get Past Leigh Wood

It was confirmed yesterday that Leigh Wood will defend his WBA World Featherweight championship against Mexican dangerman Mauricio Lara on September 24 at the Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham; a Matchroom On DAZN UK headliner.

Wood was supposed to face Leo Santa Cruz but a mutual step-a-side has allowed him to defend his title in his hometown and revisit the Santa Cruz fight at a later date. Lara produced one of the biggest upsets in a British ring when he stopped Josh Warrington last February behind closed doors.

Their 20,000 sell-out Headingley rematch ended after just two rounds due to a cut on the left eye of Lara after an accidental clash of heads which led to the contest ending in a technical draw.

In his most recent performance, the 24-year-old Mexican viciously knocked out Emilio Sanchez in three rounds on the Chocolatitio Martinez undercard showing his destructive punching power.

Mauricio Lara explained to NoSmokeBoxing that he has been patiently waiting for another big chance after the disappointing end to the Warrington rematch, and on September 24, he will make the most of the opportunity presented to him. Lara has no problem facing Wood in the UK, where he feels at home, and is glad to be back in the country where he got his breakthrough moment.

The challenger rates Wood as a quality fighter and respects the Nottingham champion for choosing such a tough voluntary defence. Lara promises to leave everything in the ring on September 24th and if the knockout is there, he will take it with both hands and make a real statement in front of thousands of Wood’s fans.

Wood is a stepping stone in Mauricio Lara’s mind as he won’t let this fight take the focus off of his bigger goal which is the trilogy contest with Josh Warrington. The Mexican believes that Warrington is a cheater due to his use of headbutts in the rematch, which Lara feels caused the fight to unfairly end when he would’ve knocked him out again. “We all know the dirty things he did in the fight (Lara Warrington 2) and believe me, I’ll get my revenge in any way I can”.

NOTE: Mauricio Lara has not been made aware of any rematch clause.
