Smith vs Mwakinyo: British Super Welterweight Star Returns To His Hometown
Liverpool’s Liam Smith (31-3-1, 18 KOs) makes his BOXXER debut as he headlines at the M&S Bank Arena (formerly known as Echo Arena) in his home city on Saturday, 3rd September, live and exclusively on Sky Sports in the United Kingdom and FITE TV in the United States among other international territories.
Making his way to Merseyside to face the hometown hero is the heavy-handed Hassan Mwakinyo (20-2, 14 KO’s), who shocked the British boxing fanbase on his 2018 visit to the UK when he demolished the infamously tough Sam Eggington in just two rounds.
WBO super-welterweight champion Natasha Jonas (11-2-1, 8 KOs) kicks off a monumental month for women’s boxing when she looks to add the WBC crown to her collection in a blockbuster unification fight at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool.
Fighting in her beloved home city of Liverpool, Jonas – who was the first-ever British female boxer to compete at an Olympic Games a decade ago – faces Sweden’s unbeaten defending WBC world champion Patricia Berghult (15-0, 3 KOs).
Two of the UK’s top light-heavyweights will collide on the undercard when reigning British Light-Heavyweight champion ‘Super’ Dan Azeez (16-0, 11 KO’s) meets former champion Shakan Pitters (17-1, 6 KO’s) to make his first defence of the British Light-Heavyweight Championship he won by stopping the highly-accomplished Hosea Burton in November last year.
‘Britain’s best prospect’ Slough’s Adam Azim (5-0, 4 KO’s) will face Argentina’s 23-year-old Michel Cabral (5-4, 1 KO). Cabral has never been stopped in four defeats and upset unbeaten Argentinian prospect Franco David Rodriguez (4-0) in his last contest via split decision showing Cabral is not here to fall over and will try and win.
Also on the Smith Mwakinyo card, Burton Heavyweight Frazer Clarke (2-0, 2 KOs) will compete for the third time as a professional against unbeaten Bulgarian Pencho Tsvetkov (7-0, 5KOs) over six scheduled rounds. Clarke intends to move slow and learn the professional game, Tsvetkov comes with an unbeaten record but should be levels below the 2020 Olympic bronze medalist.
